Episode 15 - Consumer Protection: Keeping Customers Safe and Satisfied
Hey Store Manager! Mike here on "Smoke Break." Today's topic is consumer protection - making sure your customers get exactly what they expect and deserve when they shop at your store. This isn't just about following rules - it's about building trust.
Remember that feeling when a customer points out a price discrepancy? Or questions whether a product is fresh? These moments define your store's reputation. Let's make sure you handle them right.
First up - pricing accuracy. Every price on your shelf needs to match your register. Period. Run regular price checks. When you find mistakes, fix them immediately. Some states have strict laws about price accuracy - violate them, and you're looking at serious fines.
Product dating matters more than you might think. Check expiration dates daily. Pull expired products immediately. Don't try to sell something close to expiration at a discount unless your state specifically allows it. When in doubt, take it out.
Speaking of products - labeling has to be spot-on. If you're selling anything in bulk or repackaging items, they need proper labels with ingredients and allergen information. One missing allergen warning could put someone in the hospital.
Customer data protection is huge. If you're collecting any customer information - even just for a loyalty program - you need to protect it. Have clear policies about how you handle customer data. Train your team on privacy rules.
Refund policies need to be clear and visible. Post them where customers can see them. Make sure your team knows them and follows them consistently. Different rules for different products? Post that too.
Question: Why is it important to immediately fix price discrepancies, even if they're in the store's favor?
Think about it. The answer? Price accuracy isn't just about avoiding fines - it's about maintaining customer trust. Plus, in many states, charging more than the posted price is illegal, regardless of intent.
Your action item for this week:
Do a complete price audit of your store. Check shelf tags against register prices. Review all posted policies. Make sure everything's current and accurate.
